Dior
Born in 1905 in Normandy, Christian Dior comes from a rich industrial family, his father owning several chemical plants.
In 1929, the crisis ruins the Dior family who must sell all his properties. Before being drafted in 1939, Christian Dior learns the fashion design and even sells a few sketches to the couturiers of the time.
Pursuing his path, he becomes in 1941, the assistant of Lucien Lelong with Pierre Balmain and one year later, fashion illustrator for the Figaro.
Finally, in 1946, thanks to the funds brought by Marcel Boussac, Christian Dior opens his renowned house 30 avenue Montaigne.
He then launches in February 1947, his first collection of ready-to-wear for women and follows up by creating a branch in the United States, the Christian Dior New York Inc. The young Yves Saint Laurent becomes also his assistant in 1955.
In 1957, he makes the headlines of the New York Times, a true premiere in the world of fashion.
He dies from a heart attack at 52, on October 1957 in Italy.
Yves Saint Laurent then takes over and presents, in 1958, a new line, the « trapeze » collection which was amazingly successful.
After this Yves Saint Laurent leaves and Marc Bohan arrives and will stay at the service of the Dior house until 1989. Many changes then take place, he is at the origin of the first Baby Dior collection and of the first Dior line for men.
In 1985, the billionaire Bernard Arnault becomes the CEO of the Dior house and Gianfranco Ferre replaces Bohan a few years later to head all the collections of the brand.
In 1997, the Dior house opens another chapter of its history with the arrival of John Galliano, appointed artistic director of all the women collections.
His eccentricity, his mad creativity, his avant-gardist spirit makes the success of the Dior house for more than ten years.
With Bernard Arnault, the Dior house then becomes the world leader of luxury.
Finally, in 2008, Victoire de Castellane launches a first line of fine jewelry revealed one year and a half later. With the establishment of the boutique two years later Place Vendôme, the jewelry becomes a full-fledged Dior department.
Dior jewelry becomes then the youngest of the French houses, and starts playing in « the big league » of jewelers in 2001, with an original and innovative message, by the beautiful folly of his jewels as well as by its offbeat staging.
After more than 60 years of existence, the Dior house and its recent jewelry department, still embodies the prestige of craftsmanship and of the taste for the Made in France luxury.
